If you are disabled or have a condition (or conditions) that, at some point, prevents you from working and earning a substantially gainful income, as determined by the social security administration, you should do the following: 1. Contact the social security administration and advise whoever you speak to that you would like to apply for disability benefits. Whether or not your claim will be for social security disability or SSI disability will be determined by SSA. How do you contact the social security administration? Simply contact the office closest to where your live. 2. After you contact the local social security office (either by doing a walk-in visit or by making a phone call), an application interview will either be conducted or an appointment will be made to have one conducted at a later date. Can you do a disability application interview over the phone? Yes, this can be arranged if you have transportation or mobility problems. To get benefits for a disability (in other words, to get approved), it must be shown that A. you have an impairment, B. the impairment must be severe, and C. the impairment must prevent you from working and earning a substantially gainful income for a period of not less than twelve months. Can you get benefits for a disability if your condition has not yet lasted twelve months? Yes, you may because the social security administration can determine one of the following: that your disability has already lasted twelve months, or that it can be projected to last that long. The actual process, of course, to determine whether or not a claimant will get disability benefits will focus on a review of a claimant's medical records. Therefore, for this reason, it is extremely important for a social security disability or SSI claimant to have a well-documented history of medical treatment.
