Not all Social Security disability claims take over a year before they are approved. Some disability claims are approved at the initial and reconsideration levels, which would take substantially less time.
However, if an individual’s disability is not so clear-cut, it may take longer for the individual to receive an approval for Social Security disability. And if your disability claim has to go through the entire appeals process, it may take well over a year to be approved or denied for that matter.
Here are some things to keep in mind if you have a disability claim or are thinking of doing this:
- Some individuals have to file more than one disability claim to be approved for a Social Security disability benefit.
- Social Security disability decisions depend on many factors, such as the age, education, and previous work activity of the individual, as well as the claimant's medical conditions.
- An individual must be disabled according to Social Security rules and regulations, not just a treating physician’s medical opinion.
- The best advice for an individual, who is unable to work, would be to follow the disability appeals process until you achieve a favorable decision.
- If you are not successful the first time, start the process again.
- If an individual is unable to work due to medical or mental conditions, then it is not a waste of time for the individual to continue the disability process until they receive a favorable medical decision.
