The amount of any Social Security back payment depends upon the month of entitlement to a cash benefit and when you are approved for disability. Social Security disability’s month of entitlement is the sixth month following the month of an individual’s establish onset date. Social Security disability has a five-month waiting period, which is not payable to a disabled individual. Generally, SSI disability’s month of entitlement is the month of filing, if the individual has met all non medical requirements as of that date. Now how does this affect an individual’s back payment? If your disability claim has to go through the entire appeals process, it may take many months to receive a favorable decision. And in that case, the Social Security Administration will back pay all of the months back to your established month of entitlement. Of course, the back payment may be substantial considering that it may take as long as twenty-four months to receive a decision at the disability hearings level. SSI back payments are often not given in a lump sum at one time, because of the income and resource limits.
