The disability process may take months, particularly if you have to follow the appeal process to a Social Security hearing, Appeals Council review, or a Federal Court case (should you wish to pursue the claim to that level). Incidentally, most individuals pursue their claim to the hearings level and if they are denied at a hearing they may file an Appeals Council request (you may file a new disability application at the same time you are waiting on an Appeals Council decision). Here are some things to keep in mind as you pursue your claim with social security: 1. Social Security provides no means to help with you living expenses, while you wait for your Social Security disability determination, so you may have to rely on family and friends to help you through this time. Of course, if you have little or no income or resources, Social Services may be able to help with some of your needs. 2. If you know your particular impairment is getting worse, and you feel it will eventually cause you to stop working, you should look into filing for disability benefits and also prepare for the possibility of going through a long Social Security disability process. But even though the process will be hard, you should file as soon as possible because the process can be very lengthy.
