CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME - INFORMATION TO WIN A SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY (SSD, SSDI) OR SSI CLAIM

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or CTS, is a type of musculoskeletal problem which may be classified under the heading or RSI, or repetitive strain injury.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel area of the wrist and occurs when connective tissue in either wrist (ligaments, tendons) becomes enlarged or inflamed.

The result of this tissue enlargement is a pinching of the nerve (the median nerve) that runs from the tunnel of bones and ligaments in the wrist to the fingers and base of the thumb.

This "pinching" results in a range of symptoms similar to the peripheral neuropathies experienced by individuals who have chronic diabetes: 1. sensations of tingling, burning, or even numbness in the fingers, 2. a loss of manual dexterity and grip strength, 3. an occasional locking of the finger joints in various positions, 4. swelling and inflammation in the fingers, and 5. pain.

CTS affects millions of individuals worldwide. At least half of those affected by carpal tunnel syndrome have, likely, developed the condition as a result of their particular work functions.

However, repetitive stress injuries of this sort are not limited to any specific industry. Sedentary, clerical workers may develop carpal tunnel difficulties as easily as poultry plant line workers.

Prescription drugs and other types of medications available at pharmacies for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome are generally designed to alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by cts.

Often, however, the only relief available for intractable carpal tunnel pain comes from hand surgery, or surgical release. Carpal tunnel release, in fact, is one of the most commonly performed surgeries today.

Fortunately, though this condition can be quite painful and resistant to treatment, for most individuals Carpal Tunnel Syndrome will not be a permanent impairment.
