Questions about Multiple Sclerosis - MS |
|
Individuals with multiple sclerosis or MS are generally affected by constipation or fecal incontinence; however both problems may exist simultaneously. Treatment options for constipation generally include medications such as stool softeners or laxatives. Although, dietary changes which may include more fluids, bulk supplements, or increased dietary fiber are also useful for the treatment of constipation. Individuals with fecal incontinence may benefit from a daily enema to clean the stool from the bowel. For individuals with both fecal incontinence and constipation, treatment options may be more limited because constipation treatment may affect incontinence symptoms negatively.
