Treatment options for individuals with multiple sclerosis or MS will generally include the use of medications that are designed to help control both urgency and frequency symptoms involving the bladder. Self-catheterization may be useful for some individuals in an effort to control bladder incontinence. Most physicians recommend that individuals with bladder problems should drink more fluids to help with the evacuation of urine and lessen the urinary urgency symptom. Urinary tract infections are common among individuals with multiple sclerosis. Generally these infections are caused by a build up of bacteria in the urinary tract due to the bladder’s inability to void properly. Treatment options for urinary tract infections generally include the use of antibiotics designed to destroy the bacteria. Additionally, there are simple actions that can help to prevent urinary tract infections, such as: 1. Drink plenty of fluids to help the bladder function properly. 2. Drink cranberry juice or take cranberry supplements to help maintain an acidic ph in the urine, as this will discourage bacteria growth. 3. Void the bladder before and after intercourse to rid the area of bacteria.
