Echinacea has been shown to possibly cause an increase in T cells, which are already elevated in individuals with MS. Other supplements such as asian ginseng, garlick, maitake and shiitake mushrooms, and singing nettle, also have had a similar effect in experiments. However, there have been no studies performed (as of yet) to verify the actual effect of supplements on the immune systems of multiple sclerosis patients; therefore supplementation may pose risks. There is clinical evidence that echinacea may magnify the toxicity of medications in the liver. Among those medications are interferons and methotrexate. These are commonly used to treat the symptoms of MS.
