The standard drug treatment for MS attacks is corticosteroids. These drugs work well in the short term because they are powerful anti-inflammatory agents. However, long-term usage may increasingly impair the immune system with each course that is taken. A weakend immune system, of course, will leave the body open to infections, and possibly slow down its ability to heal itself. These steroid treatments also have other negative side effects such as weight gain and unwanted hair growth. Additionally, if your treatment involves the use of drugs that suppress the immune system, you may be at risk for hypertension, lymph node swelling, and in some cases an increased risk of cancer.
