Questions about
Migraines

Muscle tension headaches, whether they are acute (fairly temporary and easily treated) or chronic (occurring frequently and sometimes lasting days at a time), do not involve the same symptoms as migraines. Unlike migraines, muscles tension headaches have no auras and generally no vomitting. Also, muscles tension headaches tend to affect the two genders, men and women, somewhat equally; whereas, migraines overwhelmingly beset females (seventy percent of those with migraines are women).

However, some doctors believe that migraines and tension headaches (also known as muscular contraction headaches) are not really so different. According the authors of the book, "Headache Relief", tension headaches and migraines are at different points on the same continuum and both conditions may involve the serotonergic sysem "which controls sleep, the sensation of dull pain, emotions, and the sense of well-being. Interestingly enough, problems with sleep and depression are often coincidental with headache pain.
