Gout or gouty arthritis is a condition that is caused by accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Individuals with a diagnosis of primary gout have increased uric acid production, impairment in the excretion of uric acid, or both simultaneously. Gout is characterized by severe pain, swelling, redness, warmness, inflamed tissues and in the most severe cases an individual’s joints may become deformed.
