1. The asymptomatic stage of gout is characterized by a high plasma uric acid level but without any other symptoms of the disease. 2. The acute stage is the first attack of gout. The gout attack may be mild and quick to disappear or it may be more severe and take days or weeks to disappear. 3. The intercritical stage is the symptom free time between the first and second gout attack. The intercritical stage can last a month or years, although most individuals will have a second gout attack within six months to two years. 4. The chronic stage is characterized by more frequent polyarticular (multiple joint involvement at one time) gout attacks, kidney stones or tophi (uric crystals in joints, bone, cartilage, or even the skin) .
