Angina pectoris is chest discomfort caused by a lack of oxygenated blood supply (ischemia) to the myocardium (heart muscle). Most physicians use the word discomfort rather than pain because angina is not necessarily pain. Angina discomfort may be heaviness, burning, squeezing or even a choking sensation in the chest. Additionally, angina has been known to present in other areas of the body such as the arms, neck, shoulders, and epigastria (upper abdomen).
