IS IT RARE TO GET DISABILITY FOR CHRONIC FATIGUE?

This information may help claimants with representation, as well as claimants who are not represented by an attorney or non attorney representative. Understanding how the Social Security Disability system works can make the difference between winning or not winning the continuing disability benefits and backpay to which a person is entitled. To win a claim for ongoing and past due benefits, claimants should learn about the disability process to improve their chances of winning.

Is it rare to get approved for disability for CFS?

The social security administration does not have a listing (in it's impairment listing manual) for chronic fatigue syndrome. Therefore, for this reason, it is not possible for an ssi or social security disability claimant to be approved for benefits simply on the basis of having this condition.

However, this fact alone should not depress the claimant who suffers with chronic fatigue and who has filed a disability application.

For, in most cases, individuals who apply for benefits on the basis of having a listed impairment (e.g. adhd, seizure disorder, asthma, depression, etc) seldom ever meet or equal the requirements of a listing.

Instead, most approvals are granted on the basis of a medical-vocational allowance, a type of approval for which SSA's sequential evaluation process is used.

And, in actuality, a person who files for disability can literally be approved for almost any medical illness or impairment provided that their condition is judged to be severe and prevents them from working for at least a year.

(That's the short version. It's actually a bit more complicated than that. For a more detailed explanation, see "sga" on the definitions page).
