Serotonin is a chemical substance in the brain and a neurotransmitter that has an effect on the level of pain that a person can withstand. What makes Serotonin particularly relevant to those with FMS? Serotonin levels have been found to be lower in many patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Serotonin levels are also naturally lower in women versus men, perhaps making them more susceptible to developing fibromyalgia, or more susceptible to the pain symptoms experienced by the majority of individuals who have this syndrome.

Statistically, of course, women are much more likely to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia than are males. In fact, according to some sources, females account for approximately eighty percent of all fibromyalgia diagnoses.
