Not all doctors believe that fibromyalgia actually exists. And this may be because, like certain other disorders, no definitive cause for fibromyalgia has been identified.
Complicating matters further, though, is the fact that fibromyalgia is occasionally diagnosed by mental health professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrists. Of course, neither a Ph.D., nor an MD specializing in the treatment of mental disorders is aptly qualified to make such a diagnosis. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is often made by a person's family doctor, but even in those instances the treating physician is typically not a specialist in chronic pain or chronic fatigue. Ideally, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia should be made by someone who is thoroughly familiar with the syndrome, such as a pain specialist or a rheumatologist. |
