Just as with chronic fatigue syndrome, the similarities between myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia are strong. Patients with both disorders experience joint stiffness, sleep problems, fatigue and tiredness, and first and foremost, pain. However, there does seem to be a difference that can be distinctly drawn. Fibromyalgia patients tend to have widespread pain related to tender points, while myofascial pain syndrome patients have localized or regional pain that is related to trigger points. What is the difference between a tender point and a trigger point? A tender point hurts to the touch and causes pain just in that area, while a trigger point may or may not hurt when touched, but radiates pain to other areas of the body.
