There is a high degree of correlation between fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome. Though the estimates vary widely, it is thought that roughly sixty percent of IBS patients are also diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

Why is there such concurrence between irritable bowel syndrome and FMS? So far, the answers are only speculative. However, there are more than a few similarities between the two disorders. Both conditions in many cases seem to be triggered and/or exacerbated by stress, and neither condition seems to have a clearly definable cause. Also, both fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome are more likely to be diagnosed in individuals suffering from depression or anxiety and more often in women versus men.
