SSD and Fibromyalgia |
|
There's really no way to determine what the relationship between fibromyalgia and depression might be, assuming there is one. Statistically, of course, individuals with fibromyalgia often have a concurrent diagnosis of depression.
The concurrence of diagnoses for both FMS and depression, of course, has led at least a few to believe that fibromyalgia may be a somatic outgrowth of a depressed state. Increasingly, though, the medical community, in general, is shying away from such thinking based, in part, on fibromyalgia research involving sleep studies and hormone and neurotransmitter levels. Depending on the statistics one finds (and they vary considerably), 25 to 40 percent of fibromyalgia patients also receive treatment for depression (or have been treated for this mental condition sometime in the recent past). |
