Fibromyalgia patients often complain of tenders points. What are tender points? Tender points are very sensitive epidermal locations (skin) that exist over regions of muscle and connective tissue where FMS pain is present.
Unlike a trigger point (pressing on a trigger point causes pain in a different part of the body), pressing on a tender point causes pain in that specific area. Since fibromyalgia pain can exist in multiple locations throughout the body, an FMS patient can have multiple tenders points. And, in fact, whether or not a patient actually has fibromyalgia is often based on the number of tender points that a doctor can identify. The commonly accepted criteria regarding tender points and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is that at least 11 tender points (out of 18) should be identified upon examination. |
