Antidepressant medications have been found to be particularly useful in the treatment of fibromyalgia patients.
Why do anti-depressants help in the treatment of fibromyalgia?
First, most antidepressants have a positive effect on sleep. It is well known that a large percentage of fibromyalgia sufferers have sleep-related difficulties, and many can not seem to get a full night of restful sleep. Second, antidepressants tend to boost levels of the chemical neurotransmitter Serotonin. Insufficient amounts of Serotonin in the brain may result in a lower threshold for pain, which of course, is one of the hallmark characteristics of fibromyalgia. |
