"I am disabled, will that be affected if I get married?"
Anonymous,
Whether or not your benefits will be affected by marriage really depends upon what type of disability benefit you receive from Social Security.
Adult Disabled Child
If you are an adult disabled child who is receiving disability benefits based upon a parent or parents records, your disability benefits may terminate with marriage.
If you are an adult disabled child who is receiving disability benefits and you marry an individual who is not receiving Social Security disability benefits your benefit will terminate (this includes individuals who are receiving SSI disability).
SSI Disability
If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability, your disability benefit amount can be reduced or even terminated depending upon your spouse's income and resources.
If your spouse is receiving SSI and you are receiving SSI your benefit will be reduced to the couple's SSI monthly benefit amount. And if you spouse is receiving Social Security disability, retirement, or is working, their income could even terminate your SSI disability amount.
Social Security Disability
If you are receiving Social Security disability based upon your own work activity, your disability benefits will not be affected in any way by marriage.
