Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease
Sleep Apnea can be a challenging and oftentimes annoying disease; the main symptoms are daytime sleepiness and snoring. While the disease may seem quite simple and mild, studies are showing that it increases the risk of heart disease. In fact, a new study reports that even a very mild case of sleep apnea that is not even accompanied by daytime drowsiness can still increase the chance of heart disease.
This article is a strong overview of the study, which was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and was led by Malcolm Kohler, MD, of the Oxford Centre for Respiratory Medicine in England. The study suggests that those with very mild sleep apnea, as opposed to the more severe type of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep disorder (OSA), still showed an increased risk of arterial stiffness and endothelial function. Researchers are worried that this means that many people who are not even aware they have a case of sleep apnea are at increased risk for heart disease and other cardiovascular issues.
