Social Security Disability Claims in Oregon
Despite the fact that the social security disability and SSI disability system is a federal one, you'll find notable differences depending on where you live in the country.
In some states, the disability processing agency is known as DDS, or disability determination services. In other states, the same agency may be known as the disability determination division, or the bureau of disability determination (DDS is the most frequent name used).
In some states approval rates are much more favorable at both the disability application and reconsideration levels than in other states, or even compared to average national statistics.
Finally, some states utilize a centralized system that only has one disability processing agency location (north carolina for instance), while other states, such as south carolina have a decentralized system with multiple locations.
However, from a claimant's perspective, no matter where you are in the country, the system is largely the same. And this is the case in Oregon as well. A recent article by a disability attorney in Oregon confirmed that, depressingly, things there are very much as they are elsewhere in the country. The Portland Oregon hearing office, for instance, has a two year wait for disability hearings to be scheduled. Also, in Oregon, the agency that makes disability decisions for the social security administration is also known by the moniker DDS.
I no longer have the link to the article I mentioned, but I'd like to mention something that was pointed out that many claimants may not be aware of. And that's the fact that even after a hearing is held, medical evidence may still be submitted to the administrative law judge. And that is a topic I will address in the next post.
