Nature and Crystal Sounds Help De-stress Pregnant Women
Psychological stress is common among pregnant women. A new study by researchers at the College of Nursing at Kaohsiung Medical University, Tawian, found that music such as lullabies, nature sounds and crystal sounds, can significantly reduce stress, depression and anxiety in pregnant women. The study on music therapy was published in a special issue of the Journal of Clinical Nursing. The special issue focused on complementary and alternative therapies.
The study consisted of 236 pregnant women with 120 in a control group and 116 to a music group. The women were eighteen to thirty-four weeks’ pregnant, expected to have uncomplicated deliveries and were an average age of around 30 years old. A little over half of them had planned their pregnancies and nearly half were also pregnant for the first time. They were also all from similar social class, with similar education and occupation. All of the women had stated that they were happy in their marriages.
The control group did not listen to CDs and the music therapy group listened to four pre-recorded CDs, lasting 30 minutes each. The CDs were chosen because they each presented music that sounded like the human heartbeat at 60-80 beats per minute. The women in the music group most often listened while performing chores, resting or at bedtime, 30 minutes per day for two weeks. Each was asked to journal about which music they listened to and what they were doing at the time.
The study proved that music therapy can decrease psychological stress, using three measurement scales to measure anxiety, depression and stress. They completed these measurements before and after the study, over a two week period.
The first measurement was the Perceived Stress Scale, which measures stress on a scale of zero to thirty. The women not listening to music had a decrease in stress of less than one percent. The music therapy group saw a significant decrease of over two percent at 2.15.
The State Scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to measure anxiety, which measures on a scale of 20 to 80. The music group fell by over two percent, while the non-music group saw an increase of anxiety by nearly one percent.
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale, which measures from zero to thirty, was used to measure depression. The non-music group only fell by 0.03 percent, but the music therapy group saw a decrease in depression by nearly two percent.
The women listening to music also had a preference for the music they listened to: nature sounds, crystal sounds and lullabies were their favorites, and were surprisingly more relaxing for them than classical music.
