New, Minimally Invasive Back Surgery

Have you had back pain at some point in your life? Most Americans have. It is thought that nearly 75 to 85 percent of Americans have experienced some form of back pain in their lives. While many cases of back pain will improve and go away on their own due to the body’s amazing healing system, other cases may get worse to the point that surgery is needed. It is thought that about 10 percent of back pain cases end in back surgery.

A surgical technique known as spinal fusion has been used for years to eliminate back pain. The procedure may be used for degenerative disk disease, spinal tumor, scoliosis, spinal disk herniation, discongenic pain and many other back conditions. The procedure itself involves large incisions, open surgery and long healing times. Up until recently, spinal fusion or some form thereof, such as lumbar interbody fusion and posterolateral fusion, was the only option for those who were experiencing severe back pain.

Fortunately, there is a new procedure for those experiencing back pain in need of surgery. This new type of surgery is minimally invasive and much painful than traditional spinal back fusion. It is called Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion (AxiaLIF). This new type of surgery involves a small incision, less than one inch. Through this small incision the surgeon can clean out the painful disk and then insert bone fusion substance. Afterwards, the area is stabilized with screws. Recovery time is much less – six to twelve weeks.

With AxiaLIF, patients are usually allowed to leave the hospital within one or two days. Although patients still need rehabilitation so they do not experience damage to their spine, they are able to move around and get back to their normal activities a lot quicker. Patients still need to be aware that risks can include blood clots, stroke, heart attack, infection and recurrent disc herniations. The risks are the same with AxiaLIF as with open surgery procedures, but overall AxiaLIF is much gentler alternative to open surgeries with long recovery times.
