Applying for Disability-How do I start?
How do I start the process of applying for Social Security disability? Social Security has two disability programs: Social Security disability and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability, and both programs use the same disability application process.
To apply for Social Security disability you must have a medical or mental condition or a combination of impairments that have either prevented you from sustaining substantial work activity for a year or that you expect to prevent you from working for a year.
Naturally, an individual with a terminal illness can file for Social Security disability, however they have to be unable to sustain substantial work activity as well (many individuals with terminal illnesses continue to work, so disability benefits are not based solely upon a diagnosis of a terminal condition).
You may be asking yourself why an individual with a terminal condition does not automatically receive an approval for disability benefits. Social Security disability programs are geared toward residual functionality (meaning what you are able to do despite your medical and/or mental condition) rather than specific medical conditions, so if your condition has not prevented you from performing substantial work activity (each year Social Security determines a monthly substantial work activity amount, if you are over that monthly amount you are performing substantial work activity), you will not be eligible for disability benefits.
If your condition is terminal (and you have been unable to work), or you have a medical and/or mental condition that has prevented you from maintaining substantial work activity it is time to start the Social Security disability application process. So how do you start?
All Social Security disability claims require filing a disability application with the Social Security Administration. You can complete your disability interview in person or via the telephone with a Social Security claims representative.
What information do you need for you disability interview? You should be prepared to provide information about your disabling condition or conditions, when you stopped working or significantly reduced your work activity, your medical treatment providers, your work history for the past fifteen years (what types of jobs), your income and resources, as well as other personal information about your marital history, children, and military service during your disability application interview.
Once you have completed your disability interview with Social Security your disability claim will be sent to the state agency responsible for processing Social Security medical determination.
