What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen therapy is a complementary and alternative healing method created in the 1950’s by Tom Bowen, a gifted healer who was known to treat thousands of people each year. Experts have reported that Bowen therapy is good for pain, asthma, migraines, fibromyalgia, TMJ, cerebral palsy and a host of other issues, from fertility issues to anxiety and slipped discs. The technique is non-invasive and claims to trigger the body’s own healing system.
Similar to massage, Bowen therapy works by using the thumbs and fingers to make circular rolling movements on the muscles and tendons of the body. These movements are thought to send neurological impulses to the brain that trigger muscle relaxation, relieving muscle spasms, decreasing pain and increasing blood and lymph flow. Bowen therapy works with the body’s meridian systems, similar to acupuncture and acupressure, as well as working with connective tissue and the lymphatic system. Each session is around 30 to 40 minutes and is not painful.
A 351 person nationwide study was done using Bowen therapy for back pain, with positive results. While only ten percent of the participants reported no change in their pain, 55 percent reported partial recovery and 35 percent reported full recovery.
If you would like to try Bowen therapy, make sure that you choose a properly trained, insured practitioner.
