Psynome – an at-home saliva test for bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that affects approximately six million Americans; it is the sixth leading cause of disability in the United States. Statistics show that it can take up to seven years to appropriately diagnose the illness, while many other illnesses are ruled out and oftentimes many other drugs and medications are inappropriately prescribed.

A new biotechnology startup company out of San Diego, CA, hopes to put a rest to long diagnosis times. Their solution? An at-home test that allow patients to know within days whether or not they are at a higher genetic risk for the disease.

While the biotechnology company, Psynomics, is calling the bipolar gene test the “cutting edge of science”, other scientists and doctors of psychiatry and psychology are not agreeing.

The test works by analyzing a saliva sample to determine whether or not certain gene mutations are present. The company claims that this test can determine whether or not you are not a patient is at a much higher risk for bipolar disorder – 300 percent higher according to Psynomics. After analyzing the saliva, Psynomics sends the test results to the patient’s doctor.

The test is called Psynome and is causing quite a stir within the medical community. Many are adamant that it is a waste of money and that there is not enough evidence to prove the test affective. Others are worried that it could be misleading by diagnosing people at a high risk even if they do not have the disease or diagnosing those with bipolar symptoms as low risk. Many are saying it is irresponsible of the company to offer Psynome™ to anyone who can use a computer.

The company argues that the test is merely a tool to help the patient’s primary medical physician.
