Leg Pain could be Hardening of the Arteries
Have you ever been walking and suddenly had to stop because of pain in your legs? Maybe it was an achey pain that you didn’t quite understand, but once you stopped to rest it was fine. Or maybe it was fine for a short period and then the ache came back, forcing you to stop again. If this has ever happened to
you, it’s recommended that you have your doctor check you for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).
PAD most commonly occurs in people over 50 and is even more prevalent in those with diabetes or smokers. While most people may attribute the pain to an achey or pulled muscle, what is actually happening is the arteries in the legs are being blocked by fatty deposits, starving the leg muscles from receiving oxygen.
PAD is caused by atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries, causing pain in the muscles not supplied enough oxygen.
If you have leg pain, you should be evaluated and treated as soon as possible. If not treated, a complete blockage can occur, resulting in limb death and amputation. That is not the only risk; if you have peripheral artery disease it is likely you may have arterial obstructions in other areas of the body. It is also more likely that you may be at a risk for stroke or heart attack.
While a little pain the leg may seem simple enough, be safe and get checked by your doctor.
