Does Abdominal Fat Lead to Dementia?
No one likes having abdominal fat, though Americans have more than most. A new study has shown that not only is abdominal fat unhealthy for the body in the form of heart disease and other conditions, but it’s also unhealthy for the mind.
The study, conducted at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, CA, found that those in their 40’s with the most abdominal fat were also those who two times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia in their 70’s, even if the leaner people had family history of those diseases. Surprisingly, even those with both parents having Alzheimer’s disease were less likely to develop the disease than those with excessive abdominal fat.
Heart disease and stroke have always been high risk factors with abdominal fat, but now that mental function is also a huge risk researchers are hoping that people will take note and work toward decreasing their waistlines. In fact, a study done at the University of Southern California found that women ages 35 to 54 had added two inches to their waistlines from a mere decade ago, causing more strokes than ever in females. This information is alarming to most health care professionals who worry that females are not only increasing their risk of stroke through abdominal fat, but are now at a risk for decreased mental function and Alzheimer’s disease.
