New Treatment for Herniated Discs: XClose Tissue Repair System
Degenerative disc disease and herniated discs can be hard to treat. Some patients use non-surgical methods such as pain medication, physical therapy and weight loss as treatments, but many must succumb to surgery. Conventionally, doctors will perform a lumbar discectomy which helps temporarily, but the results are that 15 percent of patients suffer from a recurrent herniation later in life, due to the open hole in the annulus that this surgery always leaves.
Fortunately, there is a new treatment currently in trials that may help close the hole in the annulus using polyester bands that draw the tissue together. So far, doctors have reported positive results, from patients walking the same day of surgery to patients being able to exercise and receive physical therapy within two weeks.
Unfortunately, this treatment is not available for those that have already had lumbar discectomy. It cannot rectify previous surgeries, but it can be used on new patients receiving their initial surgery.
Researchers are hoping this will be a successful new treatment for those with degenerative disc disease, a herniated disc and spinal stenosis. Tests are ongoing.
