Wheelchairs vs Snowplows
Just when I get the feeling things are getting better for people with disabilities, particularly those who rely on wheelchairs, I run across an article like one in The Denver Channel.com about how badly the snow can affect them. Well, of course, snow covered streets affect all of us, but just think about this. Picture the snow plows pushing the snow up from the street, onto the curbs, and then making that high pile on the side of the road. The snow is pushed/packed right into the access areas.
You know what this is like. I’ve had trouble walking, no “climbing” over some of them myself – on foot. How do wheelchairs get from one sidewalk to the next? Answer: They need access to bus stops and other means of public transportation. If they should happen to gain access to a sidewalk, let’s hope it’s been cleared and they are even able to maneuver at all.
In Denver , there are deadlines for residents and business to comply with an ordinance to have walkways shoveled and fines are imposed if they fail to do so. According to the article, individuals and business appear to be following the rules better than the city itself.
