Longer Lives for the Elderly
According to a recent article, older adults in the state of Pennsylvania seem to be healthier than others. People are living longer and those with disabilities are fewer. In fact, the federal Administration on Aging indicates the percentage of disabled individuals in Pennsylvania, age 65 or older, to be 39.4. The national rate is 41.9 percent.
The article, "Elderly living longer, healthier lives", found in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, really makes a person think about how they treat their bodies. There are older individuals in their 70s, even 90s who can most likely run circles (literally) around a lot of younger people who spend most of their spare time just watching TV. These active "senior" individuals are riding exercise bicycles, walking several miles regularly, playing golf, volunteering, and even holding down full time jobs.
The National Institute on Aging has statistics indicating disability rates have decreased and, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, life expectancy has increased by two years. Since people are living longer they are finding they not only need to go back to work, but they want to. Being active and productive, both socially and in the workforce, aids good health.
Dr. Neil Resnick, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center credits better awareness of the benefits of exercise and a good diet, among other things, as a reason for these citizens being healthier.
