Cirrhosis of the liver is a progressive, chronic disease that involves the formation of fibrous tissue and nodules that, over time, replace healthy tissue. Cirrhosis of the liver will progressively reduce the liver’s ability to function correctly. The most common symptom of cirrhosis of the liver is ascities (abnormal fluid retention). However, an individual with cirrhosis may also experience chronic fatigue, abdominal pain, and a yellowing of the skin. Usually, diagnosis of cirrhosis is made through examination, bloodwork, and a liver biopsy. Some causes of cirrhosis of the liver are alcohol consumption, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis, and primary biliary cirrhosis. Treatment of cirrhosis may involve abstaining from alcohol (for alcohol related cirrhosis) and medications such as interferon and corticosteroids. Unfortunately for some individuals, a liver transplant is the only option. Can you win social security disability or SSI disability benefits on the basis of cirrhosis of the liver?
