Cardiomyopathy simply means a disease of the myocardium. Cardiomyopathy is classified into two groups know as intrinsic (from within the heart muscle) and extrinsic (outside the heart muscle). Most individuals have an extrinsic cardiomyopathy related to diseases such as hypertension, ischemia, disease, or inflammations. However, there are some cardiomyopathies that are intrinsic diseases of the myocardium such as hypertrophic heart disease, restrictive heart disease. Treatment options will depend upon which type of cardiomyopathy has been diagnosed. Some options might include medications, surgical interventions such as angioplasty, coronary bypass surgery, pacemakers, and even a heart transplant.
