Behcet’s disease is an autoimmune disease that is the result of the body producing to many immune cells. The overproduction of the immune cells causes outbreaks of inflammation which are usually painful, however not life threatening. Behcet’s usually causes mouth ulcers, in fact, if an individual has other symptoms attributed to Behcet’s but no mouth ulceration, the individual must be diagnosed with suspected Behcet’s. Additionally other areas affected might include eyes, acne-like skin lesions, sore genitals, genital and anal ulcers. Behcet’s syndrome appears to have no cause such as race, sex, environment, or hereditary factors. In the United States women are more often affected with the syndrome than men are, although worldwide more men are affected. Present treatment options included medications to reduce inflammation and control the immune system.
