Vasculitis refers to a group of disease that is characterized by an inflammation of the walls of blood vessels. There are three classifications of vasculitis: large vessel vasculitis, medium vessel vasculitis, and small vessel vasculitis. All types of vasculitis are the result of damage caused by the movement of white blood cells in the bloodstream. The excessive white blood cell production and movement seem to be the result of an autoimmune response within the body. Vasculitis is a serious disorder that usually affects multiple organs simultaneously. Symptoms may included arthralgias, renal problems, hypertension, fatigue, weakness, or even neurological disturbances. Treatment will usually involve the use of steroids to reduce inflammation of the blood vessel and possibly an immunosuppressant drug to help control the autoimmune response.
