Vasculitis is a classification of diseases that cause inflammation of the blood vessel walls. The source of the vessel wall inflammation is the migration of white blood cells and the damage that these cells cause. Vasculitis has three classifications that include small, medium, and large vessel vasculitis. Vasculitis usually affects multiple organs in the body and may become disabling for an individual. Symptoms of vasculitis may generally include weight loss, headaches, fatigue, abdominal pain, neurological problems, renal dysfunction, arthralgias, and fever. Vasculitis is difficult to diagnose due to the non-specific nature of the symptoms. Treatment of vasculitis usually involves treatment with steroids to reduce the inflammation. Additionally, immunosuppresent medications may be given to vasculitis patients as they are used to treat the over production of immune system cells.
