Metastasis is a process in which cancer cells separate from a primary tumor and proliferate to other parts of the body. Cancer cells spread to other organs using the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Metastatic tumors contain cells similar to the cells of a primary tumor. Common locations for cancer metastasis are the brain, liver, adrenal glands, and bones. In theory, metastasis is always the result of a primary tumor; however in approximately ten percent of all metastasis related cancer the primary tumor is never located. Since metastasis usually occurs in the later stages of cancer, the prognosis for an individual is often poor.
