Thrombosis is a technical term for blood clots. There are two types of thrombosis, venous thrombosis and arterial thrombosis. The cause of a thrombosis is an abnormality of blood vessel walls, blood composition, or blood flow. Should a bacterial infection occur in the area of thrombosis, the resulting clot may break into small-infected pieces that spread throughout the circulatory system causing abscesses. Embolisms are caused by an entire thrombosis that has broken free in the circulatory system and may cause death should they land in the lungs or brain. Usually, infections or injury to the vessel walls will cause the abnormalities that lead to thrombosis. Treatment for individuals with thrombosis will usually include anticoagulant drugs such as coumadin or heparin in an effort to dissolve the clot and prevent another occurrence of thrombosis or embolism.
