Histiocytosis is a condition caused by an over-production of immune cells (histiocytes) by the body. Clusters of histiocytes cause damage to the lungs, spleen, liver, skin, and nervous system. Histiocytosis may also cause damage to the bones, eyes, ears, and gums. Histiocytosis usually occurs in children under the age of fifteen. However adults may be affected as well. Histiocytosis is similar to cancer. But unlike cancer, histiocytosis may go into remission without any treatment.
