Necrosis is a term used to describe the death of cells or tissue. Some known causes of necrosis are cancer, wounds, infections, infarctions, inflammations, and loss of blood flow to an area. Since necrosis is the result of an accidental death of tissue, the immune system does not get the message to dispose of the dead tissue, which may result in the release of harmful toxins that damage the living tissues near the necrosis. Treatment of necrosis generally includes the surgical removal of dead tissue, although other possible removal methods may include chemicals or even maggot therapy.
