Melanoma is a neoplasm (cancer) composed of melanocytes that affect the skin. Melanoma seems to occur more often in individuals with fair complexions and light colored eyes. More specifically, white males have the highest occurrence of melanoma. Studies also suggest that hereditary nevi (moles and birthmarks) are more likely to develop into melanoma, because the nevi are larger. However, do not rule out possible melanoma if, upon examination, you notice a mole or birthmark with an irregular border, red, black, or blue coloring, or lumpy texture. In most cases, treatment of melanoma usually involves the surgical removal of the melanoma and surrounding skin. Unfortunately, if the melanoma is advanced or involves distant metastasis the prognosis is poor. Advanced cases of melanoma may be treated with radiation, chemotherapy, resections, and palliative treatments.
