The term cardiomegaly means enlargement of the heart. Cardiomegaly is caused by ventricular hypertrophy, enlargement of the left atrium, hypertension, and dilations of the heart. Cardiomegaly is usually indicative of a more serious disease process, although some athletes have been known to have naturally enlarged hearts. Cardiomegaly can be detected on a physical exam and also through the use of imaging studies. Cardiomegaly may also be referred to as cardiohypertrophy. Hypertropy is defined as the enlargement of a muscle or organ, generally as the result of an increased workload.
