Grand mal seizures are also known as tonic- clonic seizures. All seizures are the result of an electrical disturbance within the brain and the symptoms experienced by an individual will depend on which part of the brain has been affected by this disturbance. Grand mal seizures may result in a loss of consciousness, falling down, loss of bladder or bowel control, clenched teeth, or involuntary muscular contractions. Often, individuals who experience grand mal seizures bite their tongues, convulse violently, lose consciousness and fall down. Grand mal seizures often cause cessation of breathing. When breathing resumes, respirations are described as noisy. An individual is usually disoriented and has no memory of a grand mal seizure and, in fact, some individuals fall asleep after the seizure event.
