An asthma attack is an acute episode of asthma, in which the symptoms of asthma are strongly exacerbated. An asthma attack is often characterized by shortness of breath and wheezing. Often as well, the onset of an asthma attack will begin with a sudden tightening or constriction in the chest, after which an individual's breathing will become difficult and wheezing will occur. Severe asthma attacks may lead to respiratory arrest. In rare instances, an asthma attack can even lead to death. Asthma attacks are usually treated with bronchodilators and inhalers. Other treatments for asthma attacks include desensitizing an individual to an allergen (allergies). This is achieved through allergy related injections, or by identifying asthma attack triggers and removing them from one's surroundings.
