The term allodynia translates as “other pain”. Allodynia is a pain response to a stimulus that would probably not be painful to most individuals. For example, the sensation of clothing against the skin can be painful to individuals with allodynia, while it would be barely noticeable to most. Allodynia is often associated with nerve damage, which results in a decrease in the firing thresholds of pain detecting neurons. Mechanical allodynia is pain that is related to touch or pressure (that is applied to the skin in damaged nerve areas affected by allodynia). Thermal allodynia is allodynia pain that is caused by the normal skin temperatures in the area of the damaged nerve.
