Ankylosis is a medical condition that is characterized by stiffness of the joints due to either disease or injury. The rigidness that results from ankylosis may be incomplete or complete. Ankylosis involves the inflammation of connective tissue, such as tendons, and muscles around the joint or even in the joint itself. Some use the term “false ankylosis” to distinguish it from ankylosis that is true. True ankylosis involves actual joint inflammation. When the inflammation causes the ends of the joints to fuse, the ankylosis is called osseous or fully complete. An excision of a fused shoulder or elbow may bring motion back to the limb.
