Independent medical exams are routinely sheduled for individuals pursuing social security disability and ssi benefits. They are actually known as CE examinations. CE stands for consultative examination. A CE is not performed by a "social security doctor" but rather by an independent physician who has agreed to perform such exams. These exams are not for the purpose of providing treatment but, instead, are designed to provide a current snapshot of a claimant's condition. Often, these exams last no more than 10 minutes.
Can you win disability for only certain impairments, or on the basis of any impairment? 
As these hypothetical examples show, disabling conditions can take a wide variety of forms. "C3-4, C4-5, C5-6 are damaged and will need surgery. I have a disc, C4-5 cumpressing on my spinal cord causing the pain, tingling, and numbness in my right arm . C3-4 is causing massive headaches. They will remove C4-5, C5-6, and possibly C3-4, do a bone graft and put in a plate." "I have hydradenitis (gulf ball sized cysts) under arms legs and breasts. It has progressivly gotten worse over the last 5 years. I am unable to work when they are inflamed. Havent been able to maintain work since 2001. Very painful and debilitating disease" "Have bone spurs in my shoulder which keep me from extending my arm upwards. I have pain when reaching upwards. I have xrays which show large spurs and and had several cortizone shots for the pain."
